Expert Advice
Ask to see photos of their cutting-in work (edges around woodwork and ceilings) — this separates skilled decorators from average ones.
Confirm whether the quote includes filling and surface preparation — skipping this shows up quickly in the final finish.
Ask how many coats are included in the price; two coats is the minimum for a quality result.
Check they will protect floors and furniture — good decorators take care of surrounding areas.
For exterior work, ask what paint system they use; trade-quality masonry paint lasts significantly longer than retail brands.
New plaster should be allowed to dry for at least 4–6 weeks before applying emulsion. A mist coat (watered-down emulsion) should be applied first to seal the surface before the full paint finish.
It is generally not recommended — old wallpaper can bubble, peel, or come away under the weight of new paper. Stripping the existing paper first gives a much better result and your decorator will usually insist on it for quality work.
Trade-quality smooth masonry paints from brands such as Sandtex, Dulux Weathershield, or Johnstone's are recommended for durability. They offer 10–15 year coverage compared to 5 years for cheaper options. Your decorator can advise on the right system for your property.
A professional decorator will work methodically through rooms, protecting your furniture and floors with dust sheets. Most interior work can be carried out while you are living in the property, though you may need to clear the room being worked on.
